What is Pre-K/Transitional Kindergarten?
2021-22 School Year
Pre K/ Transitional Kindergarten is a unique program with 12-14 students in each class and is taught by one/two teachers, a certified Elementary teacher and an assistant teacher. It offers Pre-K and Kindergarten curriculum in a mixed age group setting. The small class size offers children the opportunity to feel comfortable, have their social and academic needs met on an individual basis, and foster a spirit of community and cooperation. Children who attend the program move on to Kindergarten or First Grade based on readiness and age.
The curriculum has a Language Arts element which focuses on letter sound and recognition and is coordinated with the ‘Handwriting without Tears’ writing program. This ensures that phonemic awareness, reading, and writing are coordinated together.
Math focuses on counting, patterns, problem solving, graphing, estimation, number identification, and writing numbers. This wide variety of math skills ensures that the child has a solid understanding of numbers.
Science includes a wide range of activities; looking at the daily weather, studying butterflies, performing experiments, and exploring our world outside. Science is integrated into many aspects of the day.
The Creative Arts are an opportunity for children to create and express themselves in a variety of ways. Art materials and art experiences are available to the student everyday. Students sculpt, paint, sing, dance, and act out stories. The curriculum includes field trips and workshops at local museums and the study of a variety of artists and their media.
What age does my child need to be and who may enroll?
The class is for children who are chronologically old enough to attend Kindergarten, five by September 1st, but would benefit from more time in a smaller and specialized setting as well as children who miss the September 1st cut off, but will be five by November 1st provided they are ready for a more structured environment and have attended a preschool/childcare program in the past.
Children currently enrolled in the Wesleyan Preschool have a preference for available spots followed by current FUMC members, KASP, and outside applicants. A balance of boys and girls is also considered during the enrollment process.
